For many years at Reno Type, December first was the day that we decided which clients and vendors would receive some sort of holiday gift. It was always tough to figure out where to draw the line, and how much to spend. The last few years in business have, quite honestly, made the process a little easier: while we wanted to give gift baskets to everyone, we needed the money to pay the rent.
This year, things have been a bit better. We have many wonderful, faithful and regular clients… many of whom have been with us for over 25 years. And our vendors are nothing short of miraculous. They handle our ridiculous last moment orders with a smile, and have displayed no small amount of patience when we were a little later than usual on taking care of our bills. Our gross sales are up about ten percent over last year, and the cost cutting we’ve done has brought our profit margins into line with what they ought to be.
Rather than spend that profit on cookies and cheese plates, we’ve elected to use a portion of our profits throughout the year to make things better for non profit organizations and charities. The support of our clients and vendors in 2010 has allowed us to donate goods, services and money to a number of worthwhile causes:
• $13,200 to KNPB, Reno’s public television affiliate.
• $5,000 to Project Great Outdoors
• $3,000 to Friends of Nevada WIlderness, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, Friends of the River and Carson River wranglers and the Nevada Museum of art
• All non-profit organizations received 20% off our ordinary rates.
There are many reasons to be in business. Trying to make the world a better place is one of them. We thank you — our friends — for your support, and for making it possible for us to give back to the community. Here’s to a better 2011 for all of us!
