Costs in the printing industry

A client and friend complained about an overall decline in the quality of printing over the last few years (Reno Type being the exception — of course). He was surprised at my response.
Over the last 10 years, printers’ “cost of goods” and overhead have nearly doubled, while the prices we charge have remained constant, or even declined. Average turnaround times have gone from seven days to three. Something had to give.
I just made those numbers up, of course… but a study published in the most recent “Printing Impressions” indicated that I’m not too far out of line. in the last QUARTER, reported costs were up 5-9%, while prices increased less than 2%. No wonder so many printing companies are closing their doors!
